Sentimental Sunday: Beety and Moe, Christmas 1953

Two of my paternal-side aunts, Marilyn "Beety" Pape Hedger, and Rose Mary "Moe" Pape Dietz, at either Christmas 1953 or 1951 (Dad was home at 2093 West Lunt Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, on leave from the Air Force, both times).  I think it is 1953, because of other photos obviously taken the same day.

Wedding Wednesday: Who Are the Bridesmaids?

The following pictures are from Kodachrome slides I found in the study of my late father, Frederick Henry Pape (1929-2017), and were most likely taken by him. They are of five bridesmaids at the double wedding on June 13, 1953, of Dad's younger sisters, Marilyn "Beete" Electa Pape Hedger, who married James "Jim" Edward Hedger (1933-2010); and Rose Mary "Moe" Pape Dietz (1931-2007), who married Ronald Joseph "Das" Dietz (1931-1994).

One other bridesmaid was Dad's older sister Elizabeth "Betty" Mary Pape Streff  (1927-2017), who was in an identical dress, only in blue.  I'm thinking a couple of these may be of Jim's older sisters.  This first one could be Juanita "Nita" Hedger Mullins [ETA 17 February 2020:  but Nita herself says it is not her (see the comments)]:

Here is Nita's picture in the 1942 yearbook from Immaculata High School in Chicago, when she was a sophomore.  I see some similarities in the smile. [ETA 17 February 2020:  This is Nita, according to Nita herself - see the comments.]

My cousin Ginny confirmed my guess that this next one is her aunt, Lorraine Ann Hedger Marks (1925-1998).

Here is Lorraine's junior year picture from the 1942 Immaculata High School yearbook - again, a similar smile.

Das had an older and a younger brother, and one half-sister, Carol Marion Dietz Mossolle (1914-1982).  One of the following three women could be her, or they could be girlfriends/wives of Das' brothers, or they could just be friends of Moe and Beete.   Perhaps some of my cousins will know who these women are.

The best view of the bridesmaid dress is in this picture - the wind wasn't blowing it around:

The photos were taken outside the wedding location, St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Chicago, Illinois.

Mystery Monday: Aunt Moe and ? - June 1953

This photograph is of my aunt, Rose Mary "Moe" Pape Dietz (1931-2007) and a mystery man, shortly after her wedding to my uncle, Ronald Joseph "Das" Dietz (1931-1994), on June 13, 1953.

The photo was taken in the backyard of the home of my grandparents, Elizabeth Florence Massmann Pape (1902-2000) and Paul Robert Pape (1896-1970), at 2093 West Lunt in the West Ridge neighborhood of Chicago.  It was taken at the same time as another photo of the newlyweds.

I think the man in this photo might be Uncle Das' younger brother, Gerald R. "Gerry" Dietz (1932-2017), whose obituary notes he was a Korean War veteran (like my dad).  Here is a photo of Gerry from that obituary - I think it is the same man:

The image with Moe is from a Kodachrome slide I found in the study of my late father, Frederick Henry Pape (1929-2017), and was most likely taken by him.

Friday's Faces From the Past: Newlyweds Moe and Das Dietz, June 1953

This photograph is of my aunt and uncle, Rose Mary "Moe" Pape Dietz (1931-2007) and Ronald Joseph "Das" Dietz (1931-1994), shortly after their wedding on June 13, 1953.  They were married in a double ceremony with another aunt and uncle, Marilyn "Beete" Electa Pape Hedger and James "Jim" Edward Hedger (1933-2010), at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Chicago, Illinois.

Sentimental Sunday: Happy Birthday to My Aunt Moe in Heaven!

These are pictures of my aunt, Rose Mary "Moe" Pape Dietz (1931-2007), taken by her older brother, my dad, Frederick Henry Pape (1929-2017), when he was home on leave from the Air Force, in April 1953, enroute from Korea to Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, Texas.  These are cropped images from Kodachrome slides I found in Dad's study after his death.  The photos were taken on the back porch of the home of my grandparents, Paul Robert Pape (1896-1970) and Elizabeth Florence Massmann Pape (1902-2000), at 2093 West Lunt Avenue in Chicago, Illinois.  Aunt Moe has a cast on her left foot.  She had apparently either broken it, or had surgery on it.  She had polio as a child, and one leg was shorter than the other - although that never slowed her down!  She is posing with the family dog, Lucky.

Friday's Faces From the Past: Bud, Rho, Moe, and Das - April 1953

My first cousins Frank James "Bud" Streff Jr. and Rosemary "Rho" Jean Streff Grandusky (1949-2016), in April 1953, with our aunt, Rose Mary "Moe" Pape Dietz (1931-2007) and her husband Ronald Joseph "Das" Dietz (1931-1994).  Moe and Das were engaged at this point.  Note that Moe's left foot is in a cast.

Friday's Faces From the Past: Happy Birthday to My Cousin Ron!

Below is a photograph taken in June 1954 of my aunt, Rose Mary "Moe" Pape Dietz (1931-2007), and her husband Ronald Joseph "Das" Dietz (1931-1994), holding their firstborn, son, Ronald Paul Dietz, who is about a month old.

The photo above was cropped out of the photo below...

...which was cropped out of the image below, which was taken at 2093 West Lunt Avenue in Chicago, Illinois.  This is a Kodachrome slide I found in the study of my late father, Frederick Henry Pape (1929-2017).  The original includes my mother, Geraldine Guokas Pape (leaning over the ledge at the front door landing), as well as my uncle Frank James "Bud" Streff Sr. (1925-2014), whose head is visible on the right.  In front of him are his three oldest children, from front to back, they are Marianne, Bud Jr., and Rosemary (1949-2016).

My parents, who were engaged at the time, had traveled to Chicago for the wedding of Dad's older brother, Paul Robert "Bob" Pape Jr. (1926-2008), as Dad was the best man in the wedding.  More images from that day and times around it to come!

Friday's Faces From the Past: Massmann Family Gathering, ABT 1946

My paternal aunt Marilyn Pape Hedger just sent me this GREAT photo of a gathering of the children and grandchildren of my Massmann great-grandparents, Frederick Henry Massmann (1875-1948) and Elizabeth Camilla Dienes Massmann (1876-1946).

Click on the photo to see it full-size:

From left to right, wrapping around the table:

  • Elizabeth Dienes Massmann
  • Paul Robert Pape Sr. (1896-1970), her son-in-law and my grandfather
  • Agatha Patricia Burke Massmann (1903-1979), her daughter-in-law
  • Geraldine Marie "Jerrie" Massmann, Agatha's daughter
  • Charles Leo "Bud" Hartnett (1929-2007), Agatha's then-future son-in-law
  • Jane Agatha Massmann Hartnett Mills (1928-2012), Agatha's daughter
  • Alfred John "Jack" Massmann Jr. (1926-1999), Agatha's son
  • Jeanette Ann (Jean) Massmann McKay (1929-2001), Agatha's daughter

And on the other (right-hand) side of the table, continuing the circle:

Below is a close-up of the right-hand side of the table, which is mostly my Pape-side aunts and uncles. I believe Uncle Bob is wearing his Navy dress uniform; he was in for his first tour from May 19, 1943, to May 24, 1948, further helping to date this photograph.

And here is a close-up of the first four people on the left-hand side of the table:  Great-grandma Massmann, Grandpa Pape, Great Aunt Agatha, and my dad's cousin Jerrie.

Since Elizabeth Dienes Massmann died on December 3, 1946, I think this photograph was taken sometime in 1946.  Jerrie would have been about age 10-11 that year and Marilyn about age 12-13.  I don't think the photo was taken any earlier than 1946, because those two girls don't look any younger than those ages.

The youngest Massmann child, Virginia Mary (Jinnie), was born in late 1945, so she would have just been an infant in 1946, which is probably why she is not in the picture.  Bud Streff and Betty Pape married in September 1948, and Bud Hartnett and Jane Massmann married in 1950, but obviously the pairs knew each other well before then.

Finally, I wanted to compare Aunt Agatha from the photo above with the woman I think is Aunt Agatha from the 1927-28 home movie.  On the left below is a still image from that movie, and on the right is the 1946 photo of Agatha.  Do you think it's the same woman?  I do.

Friday's Faces from the Past: Old Photos at the Memorial Service

Wonderful old family photos and a newspaper clipping on display at the luncheon following the memorial service this past Sunday for my uncle Frank James "Bud" Streff Sr. (1925-2014) and aunt Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Pape Streff (1927-2017).  I really hope my Streff cousins digitize and share the photos on this board SOON!  I see lots of family stories here - besides Papes and Streffs of various generations, I see Hedgers, Dietzes, and Massmanns too! Wordless Wednesday: 40 Years Ago This Week

One of my cousins got married forty years ago this past Sunday in the Chicago area.  My family traveled from Houston to attend the wedding, and we spent the week following with relatives on my dad's side there.  I took a number of pictures on that trip, but some of them were only printed on a contact sheet, and it was only recently that I scanned the film negatives to generate larger digital images.

Friday's Faces From the Past: Baby Shower for Regina Dietz Szpak, August 1990

In August 1990, I was en route from Madison, Wisconsin, back to my then-home in the Seattle area, and I spent a couple days with my Pape relatives in the Chicago area.  I had the opportunity to go to a baby shower for my first cousin Regina Dietz Szpak, pictured at right.  Her first child, daughter Courtney, was born at the end of September that year.

I stayed with my Uncle Bob and Aunt Lorrie Pape, and went to the shower with my first cousins, sisters Bobbie Pape Johnson and Judy Pape Schaller, pictured below.  Bobbie was expecting her second child, daughter Callie Marie who was born at the end of October that year.

Also at the shower was my cousin Shelly Dietz Sowinski, Regina's older sister:

Regina's other older sister, my first cousin Ruth Ann Dietz Zidek, was also there.  She's pictured below with her sister-in-law, her older brother Ron's wife, Cathy Sheehan Dietz, who'd just had her fourth child two months before:

Sentimental Sunday: Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories

It's the annual Advent Calendar of Christmas Memories!  I've participated the past five years (2009 through 2013), and this year, the prompts and their sequence are the same as in 2013.  Due to some pressing needs to get some other projects done, I have been linking to the appropriate post from 2013 (which also links to older posts, when applicable) in the prompt name, and adding a relevant photo - if possible.  Today is one of those days when I'm going to add a Christmas-related photo totally unrelated to the prompt - just because it's an old photo related to my family history!

The prompt for December 21 – Christmas Wishes - linking this one to some old "grab bag" prompts - Christmas in Corpus Christi, ugly Christmas sweaters - as well as prompts for holiday happenings, sweethearts, and loved ones lost.

Christmastime, 1958 - My Dietz first cousins:  Shelly, Ron, and Ruth (looking away from the camera)
