Sentimental Sunday: Shannon Wolfe Family, ABT 1910

Joseph Shannon, James Shannon, Anna Volce, Edna Viola, and Thelma Mary Wolfe, about 1910

Another family photo provided by my mom's cousin Edith Carole; this is the James Shannon Wolfe family, probably taken around 1910, based on the ages of the children.  I am glad to have a photograph of this family that was so important in the life of my maternal grandmother.

James Shannon Wolfe (ABT 1868/72-1949), known as Shannon, is my maternal great-grandfather Louis Henry Wolfe's older brother.  He was born in Pennsylvania, the oldest son of Joseph William Wolfe and Margaret Melzina "Maggie" Carroll Wolfe.  By 1895, he was in Texas, working as a bricklayer.  He married Anna Volce that year, and they were living in Houston by 1900.

Anna "Annie" Volce Wolfe (ABT 1875/9-1936) was born in Brownsville, Texas, the daughter of George Volce of Spain (or Mexico) and Lena Morlett of Switzerland (or Louisiana).  By 1900, her father was dead and her mother had remarried to a Victor Guerrero; Shannon and Annie were living with them and Annie's younger sisters Frances and Mary on the census that year.

Oldest daughter Edna Viola Wolfe was born March 21, 1894/6, in Texas.  She married Richard F. Ludwig (1878-1930), a barber, on November 16, 1921.  Sadly, she died of natural causes at age 34, only six months after her husband, on February 28, 1931, at her parents' home in Houston, Texas.  They had no children.

Second daughter Thelma Mary Wolfe was born January 23, 1900.  She too died rather young, at age 23, from gallstones and anemia, on October 13, 1923, at her parents' home in Houston, Texas.

Youngest child and only son Joseph Shannon Wolfe (also called Shannon) was born May 8, 1902, in Texas, probably in Houston.  He married Agnes Teresa Miller (1908-1996) on September 24, 1925, in Harris County (probably Houston), Texas.  They had one son, Joseph Shannon Wolfe Jr. (1926-1999)  also called Shannon!  Joseph Shannon Wolfe Sr. died on January 31, 1983, in Tow (Llano County), Texas.

James Shannon, Anna, Edna, and Thelma (and Edna's husband) are all buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Houston.  Joseph Shannon, his wife Agnes, and their son Joseph Shannon Jr., are all buried in Tow Cemetery in Llano County, Texas.

James Shannon Wolfe and his wife Annie provided a home (at 1405 Allston in Houston, where they resided from at least 1905 to at least 1940) his brother Louis Wolfe and his children, my maternal grandmother and her siblings from at least 1917-1921, when my maternal great-grandmother Addilee Tennessee Shelton Wolfe Odom Harris had abandoned her family for another man.  Louis was also living at this address when he died in an automobile accident in 1929.
